Getting started in Splinterlands can be a challenge for those of us new to the ecosystem or blockchain gaming in general. We have created this step-by-step guide so you can get started playing with no delay! Be sure to read through the entire guide and complete ALL 5 STEPS to ensure you have the best experience possible.

*NOTE* before you begin with the instructions below, these instructions are written to guide you through the process of creating a Splinterlands account on a Desktop, not a mobile device. Although the experience is similar on mobile, there will be some variations to the instructions below.

Welcome to the Splinterlands, we hope you love it as much as we do!

Step 1 – Create your Splinterlands Account

1. Create your Splinterlands account by Clicking Here
2. Click “log in” in top right corner, then click “register”
3. To get your FREE Spellbook code (see Step 2), make sure in the “Referral Account” window that “NFTY-GATEWAY” is listed as the referral account, as seen here:

Step 2 – Get a Spellbook

1. After completing step 1, you will be greeted by the following screen. Feel free to play through the Tutorial or “Skip” and come back to it later. After you play through the tutorial or “Skip”, proceed to next bullet.

2. Set up your hive wallet (hive is the blockchain that powers Splinterlands) by purchasing a Spellbook. (A Spellbook allows you to set up Splinterlands account and start collecting, playing ranked battles and earning!)
3. Click either green button (“shop” or “buy spellbook”), and follow the instructions.

4. Use the “Code” option for payment. You can get a code to redeem a Spellbook for FREE by following the instructions below, or you can just purchase a Spellbook using Paypal or the other payment options available ($10 for Spellbook in USD or Crypto).

6. Once you have purchased your spellbook, you’ll choose your in-game-name (IGN) and then log in to your new account. 

NOTE: Your Splinterlands IGN is also your Hive wallet address, and it cannot be changed once created! More details on IGN/Address in a later step.

Step 3 – Access and Secure your Keys

1. Request your Hive account keys by clicking your IGN in the top right corner.

2. Then click “Request Account Keys”

3. A onetime use link to access your wallet keys will be emailed to the email address you used to set up your account.

4. Click on the link from your email and login to view your wallet keys. 

*NOTE* Keep this window showing your keys open through to the end of the steps as being able to access your keys for copying and pasting will make linking your wallet to your Splinterlands account much easier.

5. Make sure to write your keys down, and store them in a safe place!

Step 4 – Set up Hive Browser Extension

1. Set up Hive Keychain browser extension/mobile app. This facilitates all of your transactions, similar to a Metamask wallet.

• Chrome Extension Link
• Google Play Store Link (Android devices)
• Apple Store Link (iOS Devices)
• Firefox Browser Extension Link

2. Follow setup instructions for your preferred browser.

3. Once installed, create a password for your hive keychain.

4. On screen labeled “Set up” select “Use keys/pwd”

5. Enter your Splinterlands username in the “Username” field and your master password that you received via email previously in the “Private Key” field

6. Keychain does NOT save your Master password but instead breaks it down into the three keys you use on the HIVE blockchain: Posting Key, Active Key, and Memo Key. Make sure each “Key” box is highlighted meaning you will import (store) each key in your hive wallet and then click save/import. Remember, it is your responsibility to safely store your keys offline, especially your Owner key and Master Password.

7. Once you have imported your HIVE account keys into HIVE Keychain, you’ll be able to securely log in to Splinterlands.

8. HIVE Keychain must be installed separately on each device you use to play Splinterlands, but importing and exporting account data is simple through the “Manage Account” menu as pictured below.

Notice that only public keys are shown, and private keys may only be obtained by clicking to reveal a specific key.

You now should have a basic understanding of your HIVE account and the various keys that unlock and control it. Now you can battle in Splinterlands every day with all the security and ownership of a blockchain while logging into Keychain easily with a simple and safe password.

FINAL Step – Borrowing Cards to play Splinterlands for FREE!!!

This step will allow you to immediately borrow a complete Splinterlands deck of cards and experience the game completely for free!

Create a NFTy Arcade Gateway account:

Registration screen.

1. Open Gateway.
2. Click Get started.
3. Enter your information in all fields. If you are logging in from your phone, you will need to navigate to the site from the keychain app.

Note: Passwords must be at least 8 characters, and contain one character from each of the following: lower case letters (a-z), upper case letters (A-Z) Numbers (0-9), and Special Characters (e.g. !@#$%^&).

Connecting Your Splinterlands Account to Gateway:

1. On the left-hand navigation bar, click the + Track New Account button..
2. Select a game to connect to Gateway.
3. Enter your Hive username in the Address field. Your Hive address and username are the same.
4. Select a delegation authority to grant Gateway. Borrowers and lenders should select “Active” Authority.

• Posting Authority allows Gateway to automatically delegate and undelegate Splinterlands cards for you. Select this authority if you will use this account to lend or buy decks.
• Active Authority allows Gateway to automatically make payments for Splinterlands Listings you are borrowing. Select this authority if you will use this account to borrow decks.

If you choose None, you will have to manually approve actions. For more information, see Manual Delegation

Borrowing A Deck

First – Find A Listing

1. Select the Market tab.
2. Optionally, adjust Filters and select an option to Sort By.

• Filters shows listings by availability, league, and collection power.
• Sort By shows listings by player split, duration, and collection power.

1. Click View Details to rent an available listing. If the listing is unavailable, click Waitlist.

Second – Review Listing Terms

1. Review the listing description’s details.

• Default League is what league a prospective borrower is expected to compete in.
• Minimum Rating is a minimum required Collection Power to rent the listing.
• Lender Split is the percentage of total daily earnings that you keep.

1. Check the Duration of the rental.

• Season sets the end time of the rental contract to several hours after the end of the current season. A Season duration allows you to earn your Lender Split percentage of season chests, in addition to daily earnings.
• Indefinite does not set an end time for the rental contract. The rental period can only be canceled manually on the Listings tab.
• Set Period specifies how many days you can play using the collection

Third – Request the Listing

1. Click the Collection menu and select a collection to receive the rental.
2. Click Request.

You now have a playable Splinterlands deck and can start earning today!
